we will have a special opening of the Sakaiya Taichi's former residence.
This is the place where he immersed himself in creative endeavors and transformed his ideas into reality.
Taichi Sakaiya was a multifaceted individual who left behind a remarkable legacy across various fields. His workspace, where he spent many years, has been preserved as the Sakaiya Taichi Research laboratory. It was here that he immersed himself in creative endeavors and transformed his ideas into reality. In this exhibition, we have displayed the word processors and manuscript desks he used, along with materials, photographs, and models from his projects. We hope that these exhibits will provide insight into Sakaiya's creativity and thought processes.
Sakaiya was also a very familiar figure to the people of Osaka. He possessed the perspective of an old-fashioned Osaka merchant, and his down-to-earth approach was widely respected.
His work on the Osaka Expo prioritized content that locals could enjoy, earning him widespread support from Osaka citizens. Furthermore, his policies to attract businesses to the Kansai region, including Osaka, significantly contributed to the local economic development.
The building was designed by Tadao Ando.
The building was designed by Tadao Ando. About 40 years ago, it's said that Sakaiya's wife specifically requested Ando for the project. And Ando designed the building to fulfill Sakaiya's wish to "feel like Hideyoshi Toyotomi and watch the Tenjin Festival from above."Sakaiya also served as the Director-General of the Economic Planning Agency while being deeply involved in hosting world expos. He often mentioned the 1992 Seville Expo in Spain as one of his most memorable experiences.
At the Seville Expo, Ando designed several buildings at Sakaiya's request. This collaboration led to masterpieces like the Plaza de España, which received international architectural acclaim.
Personally, they were close acquaintances. Sakaiya himself had aspired to study architecture in his student days.
A visit to the Sakaiya Taichi Research Room offers a firsthand experience of his works and creative process. We invite you to explore this valuable space, which preserves Sakaiya's legacy for future generations.
